Filtatron Contest Extended

You could win a VIP Package to Moogfest 2011! To enter, send us your best Filtatron preset between 5:00pm EST October 27, 2010 and 5:00pm EST November 5, 2010 November 12, 2010. (We've had such a tremendous response that we've extended the deadline!)

It’s easy:

1. Start tweaking an existing preset or use the sampler and/or built-in oscillator (VCO) to craft a sound from scratch.

2. Use the controls, FX, sampler and oscillator to tweak it.

3. When you have the perfect sound, go to the presets page and press MENU.

4. Press SAVE AS, name your preset & press SAVE.

5. Tap on your newly saved preset on the list of presets.

6. Tap MENU, then tap EMAIL.

7. Type moogfest@moogmusic.com in the TO field and press SEND.

The entries will be judged by Moogfest performer Two Fresh!

Two Drummers + Two Berets = Party Started!

The costumes were out in full force for Sunday Moog 2010. We spotted several Indians, Elmo, a Bikini-ed Giraffe, 3 Herrons and at least 2 Deadmau5 soon after the doors opened. Shout Out Out Out got things moving at TWA…these guys not only had two drummers, they had two guys wearing berets! How Moog is that?! When they picked up the base and the drums kept pounding the dance party had officially started.

Are You Seriously Asking Me That?

For Two Fresh, playing in Asheville is coming home, and the crowd gathered at ACC was happy to be part of the occasion. They began the show by asking the crowd the second most popular question posed to Moogfesters this year: “Are ya’ll ready to hear some new sh*t?” Without waiting for an answer, they launched into a new piece that had the audience movin’ and groovin’ . (First most popular question: What’s Up Asheville?)

These Decisions Are Killing Me!

Ok, so let’s start with Sleigh Bells. Of all the face melting shows of Moogfest 2010 this was the meltiest. Miller started with SCREAMING guitar riffs and the crowd went nuts for Alexis Krauss. The music was intense and the dancing so fierce that the floor of TWA in front of the stage started to give way. Nicely done! Cruise over to Mim0SA for more high energy dancing; the halting hip hop beats had the ACC floor filled with people getting’ down and down some more…

Souleyman and Spooky

Meanwhile, down at the Peel, Omar Souleyman wowed the crowds with his hypnotic rhythms and galloping beats. The crowd was seriously into it; the dancing was some of the most original and energetic of the festival. Smiles and clapping all around, and even Souleyman flashed us a ‘stached grin on his way to sign cds. DJ Spooky took the stage along with some help from a few orchestra musicians to treat the crowd to a preview of a new project. And then, for something completely different, he threw down a straight up old school dj set…how bout a little Kris Kross, Beastie Boys, and Aretha?

The Mystery of Moogtime

Did you ever forget that Hot Chip has, like, a million good songs? They gave the audience a night to remember as they played almost all of them in front of a packed house at TWA. They opened the show with, “And I Was A Boy From School,” then, “One Pure Thought,” followed by just about every other super-awesome infectiously catchy song you can think of. And then an encore!? How does 75 minutes end up feeling like 5?

Pretty Is as Pretty Does

Who knew the ACC could be, well, so beautiful? Pretty Lights treated the packed crowd to a trippy kaleidoscope of spotlights and lasers as he seamlessly put together the kind of amazing one-of-a-kind show experience he is famous for. His bass lines along with drummer Adam Deich’s driving drum cadences gave the audience the inspiration they needed to dig deep and keep dancing. As Derek Vincent Smith rocked back and forth between laptops, laying out the hip-hop jams and vocal snippets he clearly had a hold over the giant dance floor, and he didn’t let go.

Now Hear This

The stream of people headed to Moogaplex late Sunday night were evidence enough that people had heard how Dam-Funk exploded it on Saturday night, and there was no way they were going to miss the opportunity to see the LA legend. He treated the costumed crowd to his West Coast style samples of hip hop and funk and before long he grabbed the mic, signaled to the soundman to turn it up, and began to sing along. The dance party was ON!

The Long Goodbye

Over at the Orange Peel, Moogfesters were treated to Dark Party’s mix of old school hip hop and techo beats. The floor filled as the crowd came down from Pretty Lights; it seems the walk from the ACC gave dancing feet new life; the place was moving. The whooshing samples sometimes sounded like a plane taking off, and it couldn’t help making us feel a little sad about this amazing weekend of music coming to an end. How much incredible music did we see?

It’s Always Sunny in Asheville

After a day of lounging in the sun (or attending a discussion or Moog workshops) festival-goers filed in to check out the artists kicking of Saturday Moogfest 2010. The Mountain Men entertained and interacted with a captivated crowd at Thomas Wolfe with their Appalachian melodies and beautiful voice shaping. Across the way, Nosaj Thing, aka Jason Chung, invited the audience to ease into the evening with his mellow ambient grooves (a highlight for us was his remix of xx’s Basic Space) and then moved on the heavier stuff.

Lucky for You

School of Broken Bells attracted a large crowd at Thomas Wolfe, and the captured the audience immediately with a powerful version of their hit, “Half-Asleep.” Alejandra entranced the audience with her dreamy vocals and skilled hand dancing. Guitarist Benjamin Curtis took a minute to dispense a little Mooglove to the listeners. “I can’t believe what an amazing festival this is. You guys are really lucky.” Right back at you, dude.

Huddle Up

More and more costumed Moogers filled the ACC to dance to the hypnotic beats of Caribou. A Rubik’s Cube nearly mowed down an unsuspecting Teddy Bear, but there were no injuries reported on the dance floor. Caribou’s Dan Snaith jammed with his three supporting band mates; they way they were huddled together on the stage gave their performance an intense and intimate feel (How’d you do that in the ACC, Dan? Hat’s off!) Snaith moved from synth to drum to tambourine to recorder as he moved the crowd into an ambient-trance-throw down.

Go Do, You’ll Know How To

An enchanted forest served as the backdrop as Jonsi took the stage at Thomas Wolfe before a large and attentive audience, all ready to soak up every note and nuance of an AMAZING show. The media background worked in perfect partnership with the Jonsi’s performance; the crowd clapped excitedly at the beginning of every song, clearly familiar with his solo release, “Go.” Audience members turned interpretive dancers skipped back and forth across the wall of the auditorium; it was impossible not to get drawn into the music he created. The intensity of the songs just kept building and the ecstatic audience was treated to FOUR encores! (Some say five, but who’s counting?) It was an incredibly powerful experience; the only downside is if you didn’t get to see Jonsi perform you probably got sick of hearing other people gush about it. Don’t be a hater!

I’ve Got A Secret

The secret show was a collaboration of Caribou and Four Tet; they joined forces at Moogaplex…and it didn’t stay secret for long. The stream of people going from the ACC to the Moogaplex in the Haywood Park Hotel clearly thought that the collaboration was just so crazy it just might work…and work it did as the dance party went on and on.

Caught You Napping

Maybe a few of the people who didn’t make it through to the Bonobo set were determined to pace themselves a little better…that could explain the people we saw napping on the floor of Moogaplex and draped across the chairs at the ACC and in the back of the balcony at Thomas Wolfe. We heard a few people even snuck out to their cars to ensure they would be able to rock out with Ikonika till the final note. Where’s the strangest place you saw someone catching a power nap?

No Biscuits Were Burnt In the Making of this Festival

Three hours of dancing and dancing and dancing to the grooviest band at Moogfest, the Disco Biscuits. The place was packed with jam synth lovers as the auditorium was transformed into the Bisco Inferno. Even the TWA balcony folks, normally known for sticking to their seats, were standing up and getting down. Burn baby burn!

2,007,645,682 Wish They Could Have Been You Last Night

Amazing trip hop + Killer Costumes + Giant Dance Floor x Moogfest = One of the best shows ever. As we heard one concert goer comment, “My expectations were really high and then they took my expectations and blew them UP!” The floor was shaking with dancers by the time Thievery Corporation ended their set. Massive Attack took off where the Thievery left off as the dancing groove grew more and more crazy; Topley Bird and Horace Andy put in stellar vocal performances and the crowd was loving it all.

Four Tet Bounces an Orange and it Bounces Back

The Peel was buzzing as Moogfesters exchanged highlights and engaged in friendly debates about most-awesome-show-so-far. (We think you can make an excellent case for at least 8 of the shows!) Since Four Tet had already warmed up during the Secret Show, he started laying down deep tracks right away. Before long, the floor was indeed bouncing under the breeze from the Big Ass Fan. The packed house was treated to a thumping dance party.

Moogfest: Day 1 Recap

Late Night Revelry

The brisk fall air kept the crowds of Moogfest goers out on the streets of Asheville moving along at an equally brisk pace. Most folks jumped from venue to venue, trying to catch as many of the acts as possible, while others paced themselves, watching an act and then cruising down Haywood Street to have a drink or a quick bite at the Bier Garden or Frog Bar before returning for the next show. And the fun just kept on going…

Put Your Arms Out and Spin Around

Dan Deacon played what he described as a mellow, improvisational, never-heard-before set at the Orange Peel to launch Moogfest 2010. Deacon was set up at floor level; the audience gathered around him as gave a few opening remarks, telling the crowd how completely psyched he was to be playing in a festival that paid respect to all things Moog. “Put your arms out and spin around,” he instructed. He wanted everyone to have 360 degrees of personal space to enjoy the ambient groove he laid down as a warm-up to an incredible night of music.

Big Boi Loves Your Energy

Wearing some of his signature gold bling, an Atlanta Braves hat, and a big smile, Big Boi entertained and charmed the packed audience at the Civic Center. Barely a minute into the show he had the crowd “Waving their hands in the air, waving them like they just didn’t care.” Much cheering and dancing followed for both older (“So Fresh, So Clean”) and newer (“Shine Blockas”) songs. He even took an audience request (Ms. Jackson) and gave props for “The good energy” in the arena. Thanks for noticing, Big Boi!

Cowboy Hats and Tubas

The members of Nortec Collective stood tall in their cowboy hats and boots, a dark silhouette against a pale projection on the Orange Peel stage. Armed with trumpets, tubas and an accordion, the band soon had the crowd channeling their inner drum majors as the funky horn driven mix of Tijuana brass and funky electronica began. The audience strutted around the dance floor, heads nodding and shoulders bobbing with the beat. As the band broke into Tengo La Voz, there wasn’t a still foot in the room.

One Hundred Yards But a World Away

Many Moogfest goers had tough choices to make last night, but the fortunate proximity of Thomas Wolfe Auditorium to the Civic Center made it possible to move between two awesome and entirely different artists at many times in the evening. At the ACC, MGMT started the show off with an energetic rendering of “It’s Working,” and the crowd went crazy for “Time to Pretend.” A mellow vibe was found across the way with Claire and the Reasons. The bunches of reeds and light billows of mist-like smoke gave the stage an underwater or other-worldly feel while a cello, a violin, and a clarinet beautifully accompanied Claire’s amazing voice (think Joni Mitchell or Joanna Newsome.) The small but appreciative crowd especially enjoyed the band’s cover of Genesis’ “That’s All.” If you were willing to sprint a few more hundred yards down to the Orange Peel you could catch RJD2’s set. He played for packed and adoring mob as he gave props to Moog and unleashed new samples to go along with crowd favorites.

A Dance Contest Followed by a Magic Show

Dan Deacon laid down some serious dance grooves at Midnight at the ACC as he commanded the crowd form a dance circle underneath the UFO on the ceiling. He picked two members from the audience to have a dance-off and asked the rest of the crowd “To take a knee.” Take a knee with the music pumping? No way, Dan! That lasted about one minute until the restless crowd jumped back up and resumed their dance frenzy. Things got even crazier when Dan took his glasses off…look out!

When Girl Talk took the stage immediately following (dressed in a very creepy Freddy Krueger costume) the crowd was more than ready as he seamlessly blended his previously released mashups along with some new combinations. If any amount of jumping could ever shake the floors of the ACC it would have happened during the nonstop thumping mix of familiar pop refrains with hip hop beats. As Girl Talk sampled and resampled the line, “It’s Magic, You know….Never believe it’s not so,” the Moogfesters shook their heads and booties in energetic and ecstatic agreement.

Where’s Waldo?

He was spotted in several locations throughout Friday night though he wasn’t always easy to locate amidst the throngs of festival revelers. Cookie monsters, Giraffes, Smurfs, Baby-eating aliens, Rabbit-Head men, Richard Nixon, Cadavers, Cowgirls and Indians, Nearly Naked Girl, Super Troopers, Christmas Tree Light Men and Spandex outfits of all kinds were out in full force as Moogfest goers showed their festive and competitive spirit (hey, overall costume winner receives a pair of VIP passes to Moogfest 2011!) with all kinds of crazy and creative attire. We’re betting Saturday will bring out your wild side even more!

the spacemen Blog: Official Kick Off Party

A chill was in the air last night as mini-whirlwinds of leaves blew through Asheville and music goers filled the streets. It felt like fall in the mountains, it felt like Halloween weekend, it felt like…Moogfest 2010!

DJ King Britt (who will also perform Friday with Rucyl as part of Saturn Never Sleeps) got it kicking at the hot new bar and eatery, The Southern. An enthusiastic crowd filled the back bar, dancing to mashups that included Blondie and LCD Soundsystem, and getting their party groove on. A few flashy folks were even rockin’ the costumes…who needs to wait for a contest?! After the show, people lingered to finish off their Markers Marks on the rocks (according to bartender, Celeste, it was the drink of choice) and exchange tips and schedules for the next day. It was an awesome start to what’s going to be an amazing weekend of music.

DEVO Forced to Postpone Upcoming Tour Dates Due to Serious Hand Injury Sustained by Guitarist Bob Mothersbaugh

DEVO deeply regret that they have had to postpone all of their upcoming live dates for 2010 due to a serious hand injury sustained by guitarist Bob Mothersbaugh. A glass shard sliced Mothersbaugh’s right thumb to the bone, severing a tendon. He underwent immediate emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery after proper care and therapy.

Most of DEVO’s upcoming November tour dates, including Solana Beach’s Belly Up, , Los Angeles’ Club Nokia, and San Francisco’s Warfield Theater, will be rescheduled for next spring and the public will be informed once new dates have been confirmed.

DEVO founding members Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale will still attend Moogfest on October 29^th, in Asheville, NC. As previously announced, DEVO have been awarded the first-ever Moog Innovation Award by Moog Music. The Moog Innovation Award celebrates pioneering artists whose genre-defying work exemplifies the bold, innovative spirit of Bob Moog. Past recipients of the previously titled Moog Award include Keith Emerson, Herb Deutsch, Gershon Kingsley, Jan Hammer, and Bernie Worrell.

Amazing remixes were submitted for the 1st annual Moogfest/URB.com remix contest powered by MixMatchMusic. Entrants from around the world competed for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to DJ at this year's festival.

After torturous deliberations among the judges, the grand prize winner is Moving Temple and Peripheral for the remix of Hot Chip's "We Have Love". The Asheville-based Skew Records recording artists Moving Temple and Peripheral consist of Andy Askew and Michael McBride. Learn more about them at www.skewrecords.com. Enter the First Annual Moog Circuit Bending Challenge

Moog Music was born when a young Bob Moog, who considered himself a geeky, socially awkward kid with a passion for electronics and music started tinkering with electronic circuitry. As a boy, Moog built small radios, amps and three note organs in his basement workshop with his father & the rest is history. In celebration of this creative curiosity, Moog and Moogfest 2010 are sponsoring a circuit bending challenge, to honor all those that lick and stick, modify signals and jump traces.

How to Enter:

1. Procure a battery-powered sound-making device

2. Bend it by any means necessary.

3. Document the bend process and outcome with video with audio (required). The better you document, the better we can judge. All videos must be uploaded by midnight eastern time on Monday October 18th, 2010.

4. Upload the video to YouTube and tag with “moog circuit bending competition 2010” and “Moogfest 2010”.

5. Send an email with the subject Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2010 to info@moogmusic.com with the YouTube links to your entry.

Finals:

The top 3 contestants will be chosen as finalists on Friday, October 22, 2010 and win weekend passes to Moogfest 2010 as well as a Moog merch package. At Moogfest the 3 finalists will be given a workstation in the Moogaplex, the same toy and the same bag of tools (which includes a soldering iron, wire, switches, potentiometers of varying degrees, resistors, capacitors, heat shrink, bread boards, diodes, plus more surprises). Each finalist will have from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 & Sunday, October 31 to bend the toy at their workstations. Grand prize winner will be chosen by a Moog Music Engineer at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 31.

Grand Prize:

Grand Prize winner receives a Moog Pedal Board which includes one of each Moogerfooger (MF-101 Low Pass Filter, MF-102 Ring Mod, MF-103 Phaser, MF-104Z Analog Delay, MF-105M Midi MuRF, MF-107 ) and a Multi-Pedal (MP-201).

Remix Hot Chip and Nortec Collective for a chance to spin at Moogfest

The inaugural Moogfest in Asheville, North Carolina is just around the corner! We've teamed up with URB.com to give anyone a chance to participate using MixMatchMusic’s Mix Maker remix software that works inside your web browser. We’re featuring two different artists and songs to remix including "We Have Love" by Hot Chip from the band's album One Life Stand (courtesy of Astralwerks) and “I Count the Ways” by Nortec Collective from their new album Bulevar 2000 (courtesy of Nacional Records). One finalist for each song gets 2 weekend passes to the festival. Among those finalists, one grand-prize winner will be awarded a DJ set at this year’s Moogfest!

How To Participate

1) Choose a song to remix

2) Download song stems, its free and easy!

3) Create your remix using the stems and any additional music or beats that either you have created or have a creative commons license for. You can also make your mix online by clicking on the MixMaker button of the widget.

4) Upload an MP3 of your remix via the same widget you used to download the stems. Enter as many remixes as you like!

5) Share the track with your friends and ask them to comment, rate, playlist your mix and share it with their friends on twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and their blogs, etc.

6) Once you have finished and uploaded your remix, judges will select a winner for each track and one grand-prize winner!

Moogfest 2010 is teaming up with local and national artists and adding a fine arts component to the festival. SYNTH: A Group Art Show Inspired by Bob Moog is a showcase of hand made limited-edition prints inspired by Bob Moog’s legacy. Pieces in the show include a variety of styles of work from some of the top concert poster artists and graphic designers working today. Phish poster artist Jim Pollock, hand drawn typographer and designer Mike Perry, internationally known artist Zeloot, poster artists Young Monster, Us + Them, Scott Campbell, and Justin Helton round out just a portion of the artists involved.

These artists have all created work for some of the biggest bands and festivals in the world. Each artist will contribute their own piece and will be sold at the show in very limited quantities (20 of each!) with all proceeds going to support the Bob Moog Foundation.

You've heard about most of Moogfest 2010's amazing lineup, now we're giving fans a Moog education. In addition to MoogFest’s excellent musical offerings, the festival will also give attendees the opportunity to dig deeper into the world of Moog with a wide range of panel discussions and workshops.

The Red Bull Music Academy has teamed up with AC Entertainment, Moog Music and the Bob Moog Foundation to bring together top minds in history, technology and education of Moog. Experts, ranging from Bob's colleagues in the seminal days of synthesis to the more contemporary sound sculptors of today, are coming from around the country to share their ideas and vast experiences. The Bob Moog Foundation will be responsible for the historical content at MoogFest, including items from Bob Moog's archives such as rarely seen vintage photographs and historic audio clips from recently restored reel-to-reel tapes.

All panels, demonstrations, and workshops will take place between Noon and 6:30 p.m. at the Moogaplex, located at the Haywood Park complex. They are first come, first served for those who bought either weekend passes or have a pass for that particular day. The dates, and times will be announced in the coming weeks.
